Breast Cancer Diagnosis

It is not possible to accurately diagnose breast cancer by observing its symptoms, or apparent symptoms, with the naked eye. Many times what appear as tumors are nothing more than skin lesions or benign lumps that pose no threat. Some lumps appear due to hormonal variations and dissolve with time. It is advisable to consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis if a slight change in one or both breasts is suspected.

Breast Examination
Women between the ages of 20 and 30 are at most risk of breast cancer. Doctors advise routine self-breast examinations to feel for growths and lumps within breast tissues. A breast examination is an effective way of checking the breasts for lumps. This is a relatively simple procedure that can be performed by a woman in private. A concerned physician must be consulted if a lump is suspected.

Mammogram
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It is typically performed to screen a breast for lumps or determine whether a suspected lump or growth is cancerous or not. Mammograms are effective and  accurately detect nearly 90 percent of breast cancers, typically in their early stages.

Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)A breast MRI takes a series of detailed photographs of the internal structure of a breast to study irregularities. The test is expensive and is typically used to detect breast cancers in study people at higher risk and to analyze malignant tumors. Breast MRI's confirm the possible magnitude and expanse of a suspected breast cancer.

Fluid Test
This is a procedure in which a needle is inserted in the breast to draw fluid. This fluid is analyzed in a laboratory to detect the presence of malignant cells. This test is typically performed when both mammograms and breast MRIs confirm cancer.

Tissue Test
A tissue test is a surgical procedure that involves removing a sample of a malignant tissue and testing it to determine the type of breast cancer and its stage.
