Breast Cancer Prognosis

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women in the Western world. More than 40,000 women die from the condition each year and many more live with its disabling symptoms. Breast cancer prognosis, or outcome, depends on various factors, including the location, size and stage of the cancer. Other factors such as socioeconomic status, age and weight also determines breast cancer prognosis.

Survival rates for breast cancer are higher if the tumor DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ)--localized, or located within the ducts of the breast. DCIS breast cancer is curable.

Women with larger tumors that spread to lymph nodes have decreased survival rates than those with DCIS cancers. 70 to 80 percent of women with tumors that are up to 7 centimetres in size and which affect between 0 and 4 lymph nodes live for at least another decade after they are diagnosed.

50 to 70 percent of women with tumors up to 7 centimetres in size that affect 4 or more lymph nodes live for at least 10 more years after the cancer is diagnosed.

30 to 50 percent of women with tumors of any size and which affect multiple lymph nodes live for at least another decade after diagnosis.

The prognosis for breast cancer that spreads to other organs is not so good. 23 percent of women with cancers that spread live for at least 5 years after they are diagnosed, while only 10 percent of women will live for 10, or more years after diagnosis.

Breast cancer is unique for each individual and statistics can only provide an approximation, at best. Each case is different and survival rates vary between different treatment approaches and other factors.
