Prostate Cancer Facts

Have you been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer? At the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we understand how important it is to equip our patients with the information they need to make an informed choice. Here are some prostate cancer facts to get you grounded as you start your path to recovery.

  1. According to the American Cancer Society, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. It is the second leading cancer in men, second only to lung cancer. However, only one in 35 of these cases ends in fatality.*
  2. The quicker you act, the more effective your prostate cancer therapy will be. Cancer occurs when when normal cell growth and replacement suddenly increases at an abnormal rate. This is caused by damage to DNA. If cancer is untreated, the growth of cancerous cells will continue to spread throughout the body.
  3. If your cancer is caught in the early stages, prostate cancer surgery may not be necessary. CTCA prostate cancer centers offer immunotherapy, and non-invasive radiation that targets only impacted cells.
  4. In addition to immunotherapy, traditional radiation, chemotherapy and surgery are options. In extreme cases prostate cancer surgery or chemotherapy may be necessary.
  5. A prostatectomy removes all or part of the prostate. This procedure is used only as a last resort.
  6. Chemotherapy is drug therapy taken orally or injected. It goes into the bloodstream, so is used when cancer has spread into your bones, tissues and/or other organs, and treatment can no longer be targeted to a specific area. This treatment has severe side effects and is used only as a last resort.
  7. Recurrence is a concern. If your cancer is aggressive, or in the later stages your chances for recurrence are higher. Because of this regular screening will be a must, and follow up care is vital to maintain your recovery.
