Prostate Cancer Diagnosis
Do you suspect that you have prostate cancer? If you are a male over 40 years old, and experience frequent urination, painful urination, difficulty starting/stopping urine flow, painful ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, blood in semen or urine, weak or intermittent urine flow or chronic pain/stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs-- you are at risk. The Cancer Treatment Centers of America offer cutting edge diagnostic tools, and a supportive staff.
Frequently prostate cancer causes no symptoms at all, and prostate cancer diagnosis is often made as the result of yearly exams. If you are over the age of 40, you should be receiving regular exams to prevent the spread of early onset prostate cancer. These screenings may include a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) and a Prostrate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test. During a DRE your physician inserts his/her gloved finger into your rectum and feels the prostate gland for proper size, shape and texture. It should be noted that early stages of cancer may escape DRE detection. A PSA test checks your blood for elevated PSA levels. A high amount of PSA in the bloodstream can indicate an infection, or can be one of the first signs of prostate cancer.
If you test high for PSA levels, or if your doctor detects something unusual in your DRE, a Transrectal Ultrsound is often performed. A tiny probe is inserted into the rectum, and sound wave technology is used to detect tumors, enlargement of the prostate or other anomalies. In addition, a prostate biopsy may be ordered. During this procedure a tiny probe is inserted into the rectum and a small tissue sample is removed. This sample is then examined under a microscope for signs of cancerous cells.
In addition to these traditional methodologies, CTCA prostate cancer centers offer the PET/CT 600 Scanner which can detect cancerous cells earlier, with higher accuracy and requires no rectal probing. Your specialist can determine if this option is right for you.
