Do You Need Liposuction in New York City?

What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat cells permanently to improve the aesthetic contour and proportion of the body. The maximum amount of fat that can be removed safely is around six to eight pounds, so it is not a tool for significant weight loss, but rather provides fine tuning for problem areas such as the hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, cheeks, chin and neck. Unfortunately, while it can improve your overall silhouette, it is not an effective tool to eliminate the dimpling effects of cellulite.

Many times to achieve the goals of the patient, liposuction will be used in combination with other procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), face lift or breast reduction.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
Liposuction works particularly well for average weight adults who are genetically disposed to problem areas such as hips, thighs, tummy and buttocks. If you have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone the results will be even more impressive. Liposuction (also called lipoplasty) can dramatically transform an average body shape into one of beauty and excellent form.

If you have loose, sagging skin from dramatic weight loss or aging, or if you have health issues such as diabetes or heart disease, liposuction may not be your best option. It is also ineffective as a solution for the dimpling effects of cellulite. You will want to discuss what other options (such as body contouring after major weight loss) might suit your needs better.

Provided that you do not gain an excessive amount of weight after the procedure, the fat cells removed during liposuction are removed permanently, and your contour will not change over time due to fat cells. However, liposuction does not stop the aging process, so over a period of time natural changes associated with aging will still occur.

What are the Risks of Liposuction?
During your consultation, Dr. Dreschnack will review the risks with you extensively to ensure you are well informed and have realistic expectations of the recovery process.

After surgery:

  1. You may have bruising and considerable swelling. That is a normal part of the process and should clear up during recovery.

More serious (less common)complications of surgery include:

  1. Infection; poor wound healing; persistent swelling that does not improve; damage to nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs, and abdominal organs; deep vein thrombosis (blood clots); and cardiac complications.

Ongoing complications of liposuction may include:

  1. Changes and irregularities in skin pigmentation, changes in skin sensation, irregular contours, rippling or loosened skin, worsening of cellulite and the need for additional surgery to correct irregularities and complications.
