Uterine Cancer Staging
Uterine cancer, or cancer that affects the lining of the uterus, is one of the most common types of cancers in women. The cancer affects more than 35,000 women annually in the United States and causes an upward of 6,000 deaths. Uterine cancer is divided into various stages, based on its extent of spread.
These stages are listed below:
Stage I Stage I uterine cancer is localized in the uterus. It is subdivided into
• Stage IA: Cancer is localized to the lining of the uterus (endometrium).
• Stage IB: Cancer has spread to the muscle layer of the uterus (myometrium).
• Stage IC: The cancer has spread further in the myometrium.
Stage II Stage II uterine cancer spreads from the uterus into the cervix. However, the cancer at this stage is still localized within the uterus. State II is subdivided into:
• Stage IIA: Uterine cancer has spread into the intermediary glands between the uterus and the cervix.
• Stage IIB: The cancer has infected the cervical tissue.
Stage III
Stage III uterine cancer extends beyond the uterus and into the cervix but is localized within the pelvis. This stage is divided into the following sub-stages:
• Stage IIIA: The cancer has spread to the outer layer of the uterus; or the layer of tissue outside the uterus; or the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal wall).
• Stage IIIB: The cancer spreads into the vagina.
• Stage IIIC: The cancer has infected the lymph nodes around the uterus.
Stage IV
Stage IV uterine cancer is the most advanced stage in which the cancer spreads beyond the pelvis. This stage is subdivided into: • Stage IVA: The cancer has spread and infected the wall of the bowel or the bladder. • Stage IVB: The cancer has extended well beyond the pelvis, infecting the lymph nodes in the groin or abdomen.
As a general rule, lower the stage of the cancer, better will be its prognosis and treatment options. Stage I uterine cancer, therefore, has a better survival rate than someone with stage IV uterine cancer.
