Uterine Cancer Research
Cancer is a condition that still baffles even the most advanced scientific minds. Its exact causes are unknown and researchers can only predict its likely outcomes and survival rates. Uterine cancer, or cancer of the lining of the uterus, is one of the most common cancers affecting women around the world. Annually, it affects more than 35,000 women and causes the death of more than 6,000 women in the United States alone. Doctors around the world conduct extensive research to come closer to understanding uterine cancer, its underlying causes, treatment options and how best to avoid the disease. Results of these research studies are published in easily accessible scientific journals.
Researchers are most interested in devising new and improved treatment procedures and drug therapies for uterine cancer. Clinical trials (in which human volunteers take part) are routinely conducted to ascertain the safety and effectiveness of a particular drug. Currently, the use of adjuvant chemotherapy with and without radiation is being investigated as a viable treatment option. Drugs that are currently under investigation for uterine cancer treatment include trabectedin and temozolomide.
According to the American Cancer Society, recently conducted research has revealed that modifications in certain molecules cause regular uterine cells, in particular the cells of the lining of the uterus (endometrial cells) to become cancerous. These modifications, called mutations, damage the genetic structure of the cell (DNA) and alter those genes that manage the growth of cells. Furthermore, research has also revealed that certain families are at higher risk of developing uterine cancer than others. Another study revealed that intrauterine devices that are used in contraception can also work as a viable treatment option for women with stage 1 of uterine cancer.
