Uterine Cancer Causes
Uterine cancer affects the uterus—the primary female reproductive organ, which fosters a baby during pregnancy. The uterus is designed to withstand hormonal changes, such as those that occur during the menstrual cycles, pregnancy and menopause. These various stages adversely affect uterine health in some cases, causing the cells of its lining (endometrial cells) to malfunction—eventually manifesting in the form of uterine cancer, which affects thousands of women annually in the United States. The American Cancer Society suggests that nearly 40,000 new cases and more than 6,000 are attributed to uterine cancer.
The exact cause of uterine cancer is not yet fully known. Research has, however, determined its risk factors. The cancer is more common in Caucasian white women than those of other races. It is also an established fact that most women who get uterine cancer are above 50 years old. Women with endometrial hyperplasia and/or granulose-theca cell tumors; those who undergo estrogen replacement therapy; and those who take the drug tamoxifen are at increased risk of developing uterine cancer than other women. Being obese is another significant risk factor of uterine cancer and overweight women are twice as likely as developing the cancer than women whose weight falls within the normal range.
Uterine cancer is more common in women with a family history of the condition. It is also suggested that women who start menstruating before the age of 12 or those who menopause late are at increased risk of developing the disease. Certain medical conditions, including HNPCC or hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, also increase uterine cancer risks.
