Uterine Cancer Symptoms
Uterine cancer, or cancer of the uterus, is also called endometrial cancer. It is cancer that affects the lining of the uterus--a fundamental component of the female reproductive system. Uterine carcinoma is the most widespread female reproductive tract disease in developed countries, representing nearly 35,000 cases and accounting for approximately 6,000 deaths in the United States annually. Uterine cancer mostly affects women older than 50 years old and it is most common in women in their 60’s and 70’s.
Patients with uterine cancer present easily recognizable symptoms. The most common symptom of the cancer is abnormal and irregular vaginal bleeding. Bleeding may start as random spotting or reddish brown discharge and eventually heavy bleeding. The initial symptoms of the cancer are pyometra, or offensive, purulent discharge; hydrorrhoea, or watery vaginal discharge; and haematometra, or bloody discharge.
Other symptoms of uterine cancer are less specific and do not always suggest an accurate diagnosis of the condition. Some women report pelvic discomfort due to an enlargement of the uterus and/or an associated infection. Pain during intercourse is another reported symptom of endometrial cancer. Symptoms of uterine cancer affect sexual function, urination and even movement due to pelvic pain. It is important for a woman to discuss these, and related symptoms, with her doctor to get an accurate diagnosis of the condition. A physical examination may be conducted to check for changes or lumps in the uterus, ovaries, vagina and bladder. A pap test, endometrial biopsy and dilation and curettage test may also be performed.
