Uterine Cancer Demographics

Uterine cancer is the 5th most common cancer in the United States. The National Institutes of Health estimated that, in 2010, approximately 44,000 women were diagnosed with uterine cancer in the United States, and nearly 8,000 women died from it. Uterine cancer affects the lining of the uterus—an important component of the female reproductive tract. The cancer is most common in post-menopausal women who are older than 50 years old. Risk of the cancer increases with age and its prevalence is highest among women who are 65 or older. Median age at the time of diagnosis is 62 years, with a majority of the cases falling between 55 and 64 years of age (30.9 percent).

Incidence rate of uterine cancer is highest in industrialized countries, including the United States. Research shows that uterine cancer is most common in Caucasian white women, especially women of Jewish descent, followed by Hawaiian, Japanese and African American women.

According to the National Cancer Institute, between the years 2003 and 2007, 23.5 per 100,000 women in the United States were diagnosed with uterine cancer. Incidence rate for whites was the highest (24.4 per 100,000 women), followed by African American women (20.6 per 100,000 women), Hispanic women (17.6 per 100,000), Pacific Islander/Asian women (17.3 per 100,000) and Alaska natives and American Indians (16.8 per 100,000).

Death rates during the same period (2003 – 2007) were the highest for African American women (7.2 per 100,000), followed by white women (3.9 per 100,000), Hispanic women (3.0 per 100,000), Alaska natives/American Indians (2.9 per 100,000) and Pacific Islander/Asian women (2.5 per 100,000).
