Uterine Cancer Treatment
The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 40,000 women were diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2010 in the United States and the disease caused the deaths of nearly 8,000 women. Uterine cancer is one of the most common gynecologic cancers, with some of the others being cervical, vulvar, vaginal and ovarian cancers.
Treatment of uterine cancer depends on its type, stage, grade and general health of the patient.
• Surgery
Surgery is the most common treatment for uterine cancer. Surgical procedures that are typically used include: o Total Hysterectomy: Surgery in which the uterus is completely removed. o Radical Hysterectomy: Surgery in which the cervix, uterus and part of the vagina are removed. o Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy: Surgery in which the fallopian tubes and ovaries are removed.
• Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy uses radiation, including x-rays, to kill cancerous cells. Various types of radiation therapy is used to treat uterine cancer, including: o Internal Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy in which a radioactive substance is placed directly in the cancer. This procedure is also called Vaginal Brachytherapy. o External Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy in which radiation is provided to the cancer externally, via a machine. This process is repeated five days, every week for almost six weeks.
• Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is a uterine cancer treatment in which drugs are administered (orally, intra-muscularly or intravenous) to kill cancerous cells. Chemotherapy is either regional or systemic. Regional chemotherapy introduces drugs directly to the uterus while systemic chemotherapy administers drugs through the bloodstream. Drugs commonly used during chemotherapy include Ifosfamide, Carboplatin, Cytoxan, Adriamycin and Cisplatin.
