The exact cause of colon and rectal cancers is not known. To date, the best preventative measure is regular screening. For those with no personal or family history of colon cancer, screening should begin at age 50. Those with higher risk of developing the cancers should begin screening sooner. Regular screening can find polyps before they become cancerous. Polyps can then e removed and colon and rectal cancers avoided completely.

Along with regular screening, attention to diet, exercise, and body weight is important. Diets low in fat, low in processed and red meat, and high in fiber can lower the risk of colon and rectal cancer. American Cancer Society recommends a diet with five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Also recommended is limiting consumption of alcohol to one drink daily for women and two drinks daily for men.

Physical activity and exercise is important. 30-45 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity 5 days per week can reduce the likelihood of developing the disease. Walking, jogging, and even housekeeping, and playing with children or grandchildren are wonderful ways to increase activity.

Obesity increases the risk of developing colon and rectal cancer. The risk is found to be higher for men than for women. Those who are overweight and have a higher risk of developing colon and rectal cancer should work with their physician to lose weight safely.
