Esophageal Cancer Genetics
At the present time there is little documentation regarding genetics and esophageal cancer. This is largely due to the fact that when it has been done, there has been little indication of the disease being hereditary in nature.
According to the American Cancer Society, however, all cancers are genetic. What that means is that the genes of cells are somehow changed (mutated). This mutation of the cells usually occurs in the DNA. In general, the cellular change inhibits the regular replication (duplication) process of the cells. When this happens, the cells reproduce in mass numbers in an unorganized fashion. All cells created are of the mutated form. This results in cancerous tumors.
Today researchers are working to identify what changes occur in the cells of the esophagus that lead to esophageal cancer. It is hoped that once identified targeted therapies may be developed to improve the treatment of esophageal cancer and improved survival rates. Targeted therapies are chemotherapy medications designed to slow or stop the blood flow to the tumor without affecting normal body tissue.
