The home of whole-person & compassionate cancer care
Esophageal Cancer Staging
When cancer is staged, the staging provides information about whether or not the lymph nodes are involved and whether the disease is contained at the original site or has spread. This information is necessary to determine an appropriate plan of treatment. Learning the stage of the cancer is important for each person newly diagnosed, as well. The stage of the cancer also guides the individual in making treatment decisions.
The stages of esophageal cancer are as follows:
• Stage 0 – The cancer exists only in the cells of the epithelium (cells lining the esophagus). There is no spread to lymph nodes or distant body sites.
• Stage 1 – The cancer involves the connective tissue beneath the epithelium. There is no spread to lymph nodes or distant body sites.
• Stage II – The cancer has grown into the muscle of the esophagus but involves no lymph nodes or distant body parts.
• Stage III – The cancer has grown through the wall of the esophagus, involves 1-2 lymph nodes surrounding the esophagus. No distant body parts are involved.
• Stage IV – The cancer has spread (metastasized) to distant lymph nodes and distant body parts.
