The home of whole-person & compassionate cancer care
Esophageal Cancer Research
As with all cancer, research on esophageal cancer continues. Genetic research is working to identify the exact cellular changes occurring within the esophagus cause the cancer. Once identified, the goal of the research is to develop targeted therapies to be used in treatment. Targeted therapies are those chemotherapeutic drugs that decrease the blood flow to the tumor or interrupt the cell processes to control growth and metastasis (spread).
According to the American Cancer Society, combination drug therapies are also being studied. The goal of this research is to determine which drugs are best used together to combat the disease. In the studies being conducted now, drugs that are known to work well against the cancer are being combined with others that are known to work well in an effort to improve effectiveness. Studies of the same type are underway with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Immunotherapy is also being studied. This is the study of using medications to improve the body’s immune system so that it may better fight the cancer.
.Researchers are working to create medical tests and screening processes that will identify which patients with Barrett’s Esophagus will contract the disease. Researchers are working to find ways to destroy the changed cells on the esophagus that result from Barrett’s Esophagus. Efforts are underway to develop a method to stop these changed cells from becoming cancerous.
