Esophageal Cancer Prevention
Not all cases of esophageal cancer can be prevented. But by staying away from risk factors you can decrease your risk of developing the cancer. According to the American Cancer Society the greatest risk factors to avoid are alcohol and tobacco. Those individuals who drink more than 13 ounces of alcohol daily have an 18 times higher risk of developing this cancer. If the same person smokes 1-2 packs of cigarettes daily, the risk increases 44 times. Avoidance of these 2 risk factors is the best means of preventing esophageal cancer.
A diet high in natural fruits and vegetables is also helpful. Eaten in the raw form, fruits and vegetables are known to decrease the risk of esophageal cancer. Because obesity (overweight) is a risk factor, maintaining a healthy weight is important. Frequent exercise and a healthy diet can protect against esophageal cancer.
Those diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus, a condition that results from years of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), should be closely monitored for the development of the cancer. Barrett’s Esophagus is described as a change in the cells lining the esophagus. These changed cells have the potential to change (mutate) into cancerous cells over time.
