Esophageal Cancer Demographics

According to the American Cancer Society, men are 3 times as likely to develop esophageal cancer as women.  This year, more than 16,500 new cases will be diagnosed. Of that number, more than 13,000 will be men.  More than 14,000 deaths will occur from the cancer this year.  More than 11,000 of those deaths will be men.

Esophageal cancer is more common in whites than blacks.  In whites adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is most common.  In African Americans, squamous cell carcinoma is most common.  One in every 200 people will be diagnosed with esophageal cancer.  In African Americans the incidence of this cancer has been decreasing by 4-5% annually.

Survival rates for those with esophageal cancer are improving as treatment advances.  Fifty years ago (1960) roughly 4% of whites and only 1% of African Americans lived 5 years beyond diagnosis.  This number has improved dramatically.  Today, 20% of whites and 13% of African Americans will survive at least 5 years.  According to the National Cancer Institute today there are more than 28,000 men and women alive in the United States with a history of esophageal cancer.
