Esophageal Cancer Survival

The National Cancer Institute reports that in 2007 more than 28,700 people with a past diagnosis of esophageal cancer were living.  Included in that number were more than 21,000 men and 6,500 women.  The lifetime risk of developing esophageal cancer is 1 in 200 for men and women.  This means that 1 out of every 200 men and women will be diagnosed with esophageal cancer during their lifetime.

The National Cancer Institute reports 5 year survival rates for cancer of the esophageal as follows:

• Localized Esophageal Cancer – 37%  Localized cancer is confined to the primary site.  There is no involvement of lymph nodes or metastasis (spread) to distant body sites.
• Regional Esophageal Cancer – 18%  Regional cancer has spread (metastasized) to regional lymph nodes.
• Distant Esophageal Cancer – 3%  Distant cancer has metastasized to distant lymph nodes and body sites.
• Unstaged Esophageal Cancer – 12%

Learning to live while experiencing cancer is important.  Medical treatments are important; but it is also important to take care of yourself mentally, emotionally and spiritually. As you are able, do things that you enjoy.  Relax.  Exercise when you can.  Gather with supportive friends and family.  All of these things will help on your treatment journey.
