Esophageal Cancer Prognosis

The process of forecasting or predicting life expectancy is called prognosis.  Physicians treating those with esophageal cancer strive to provide an accurate medical prognosis.  Included in a prognosis are the chances for cure, remission, and survival from an illness.

Learning about your prognosis and discussing it with your medical team is a personal decision.  For some it is very useful and meaningful to fully understand prognosis.  For others, discussing prognosis can be a painful and anxiety provoking experience.  In making the decision to learn about and discuss prognosis with your physician it is important to understand clearly your personal thoughts and feelings about it.  There is no right way or wrong way to manage your illness.  Each person should make a decision that makes him comfortable.

According to Merck, the prognosis for those diagnosed with esophageal cancer is poor.  The 5 year survival rate is less than 5%.  Many die within one year of learning of the diagnosis.  This is because esophageal cancer is usually diagnosed in advanced stages when treatment is much less successful.  Still, while the prognosis may be poor it is important to note that in 2007 there were more than 28,000 Americans living with a past diagnosis of esophageal cancer.
