Prevention of Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix—part of the female reproductive system. There are nearly 11,000 new cases and approximately 4,000 deaths due to the cancer in the United States alone, according to the American Cancer Society. Its prevalence is higher in other regions of the world, in particular its underdeveloped nations. Cervical cancer, like all other types of cancer, can only be effectively prevented if women are aware of its risk factors and take all precautions to control them. Cervical cancer is associated with the HPV (human papillomavirus) virus which is transmitted sexually. Cervical cancer, like all other types of cancer, can only be effectively prevented if women are aware of its risk factors and take all precautions to control them.

Controlling Smoking Habits

Smoking weakens the defense mechanism of the human body, making it susceptible to infliction. Women with weaker immune systems are at greater risk of falling prey to the HPV virus.

Being Careful in Intimate Relationships

Studies reveal that women with multiple sex partners are more at risk of contracting the HPV virus-- that eventually lead to cervical cancer. Unsafe sex further exaggerates the problem since the virus can then be transmitting from one individual to another.

Regular Pap Smear Testing

An annual Pap smear test is one of the most accurate ways to detect cervical cancer. It allows doctors to catch the condition at an early stage so it can be successfully treated and prevented. Women are advised to follow up all abnormal findings and cervical irregularities, if any.

Using Precaution

Women must practice safe sex even with regular partners. This prevents direct contact with body fluids and reduces the risk of contracting the HPV virus. Unprotected sex also exposes the body to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) virus.

Getting HPV Vaccine

Women below the age of 27 should get the HPV virus vaccine. This prevents exposure to high-risk strains of human papilloma virus. Gardasil is an effective vaccine that safeguards against HPV.
