Cervical Cancer Tests
Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix--part of the female reproductive system. According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, approximately 12,200 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed in the year 2009, leading to more than 4,200 deaths. The cancer is slow-growing with no or minor symptoms. Regular Pap tests can effectively pinpoint abnormal cervical areas/cells, which are then further examined by other diagnostic tests. The most common cervical cancer tests include the Pap Test, Coloscopy and Cone Biopsy.
Pap Test
A pap test, also called a cervical smear or Pap smear, is used to detect precancerous and cancerous cells or tissues. The procedure involves scraping cells from the cervix and examining them under a microscope for abnormalities.
Colposcopy
A colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure that is performed by an instrument called a coploscope, which magnifies the cervix for detailed study. The procedure is non-invasive and helps doctors isolate abnormal areas for further evaluation. The procedure is painless for most women, who are often discharged immediately after. Coloscopies are typically performed after a Pap test shows abnormal changes and/or cancerous lesions in the cervix. A coloscopy may be followed by a biopsy if the procedure reveals cancerous abnormalities.
The vaginal area may feel slightly sore for 24 to 48 hours following the procedure. Minor spotting is excepted and considered normal. Women are advised not to engage in sexual intercourse, use vaginal medications, tampons or douche for at least 24 hours before and after the procedure.
Cone Biopsy
A cone biopsy is a surgical procedure in which a portion of an affected cervical tissue is cut out and examined in a laboratory. The procedure is done to remove precancerous or cancerous tissue and to diagnose cervical cancer. Patients are prepared for the procedure, which is conducted under general anaesthesia. Cone biopsies are generally safe and highly effective.
