Cervical Cancer Survival
Cervical cancer was the major cause of death in American women until recently. It was only in 1955 when deaths due to cervical cancer went down by 74%. As of September 2010, cervical cancer is the only type of cancer that can be prevented if caught at an early stage. Cervical cancer progresses through five stages, depending on the severity of the disease. Below are the survival rates as per each stage.
Stage 1A
This is the first stage of cervical cancer. Survival rate is estimated to range between 96% to 99%, which translates into 96 to 99 of every 100 stage 1A cervical cancer patients being successfully treated.
Stage 1B
At this stage, cervical degeneration due to the cancer is clearly visible without the use of a microscope. Survival rate for stage 1B cervical cancer is anywhere from 80% to 90%. Treatments for stage 1B cervical cancer may include chemotherapy and radiotherapy in addition to surgery.
Stage 2
Cervical cancer has spread to tissues adjacent to the uterus at this stage. The lateral wall of the pelvic area, however, remains unaffected. Survival rate for stage 2 range between 65% and 69%. Treatments for stage 2 cervical cancer include chemotherapy and radiotherapy following surgery.
Stage 3
Stage 3 cervical cancer has extended to the upper region and beyond the parameters of the pelvis, affecting the kidneys. Stage 3 cervical cancer is advanced and survival rates are a mere 40% to 43%. Treatments for stage 3 include a multitude of treatments and medication.
Stage 4
This is the most advanced stage of cervical cancer, with it affecting other organs of the body. Treatment becomes difficult at stage 4 and its survival rates are low: ranging between 15% and 20%.
