Cervical Cancer Prognosis
Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Approximately 471,000 new cases and 288,000 deaths of cervical cancer are reported annually. The cervical is that part of the female reproductive system that lies within the pelvis. It connects the vagina to the uterus. Cervical cancer is the condition in which cancer (malignant) cells develop in the tissues of the cervix.
Cervical cancer prognosis (chances of recovery) varies and depends on factors such as and stage of cervical cancer at the time of diagnosis. Other factors that affect prognosis include a patients general health and age. Different treatment options are available for cervical cancer patients. Doctors formulate appropriate treatment options based on prognosis cervical. Standard treatments include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.
Cervical cancers are divided into stages I, II, III and IV (IV A and IVB). Stages II, III and IVA are locally advanced (local to the cervix) while stage IVB is advanced cancer beyond the pelvis, also called metastasized cervical cancer.
60% of women with stage II cancer will be cured. The cure rate lies between 30% and 40% for women with stage III cervical cancer. According to the authors, the rate of prognosis is bleak for women with stage IVA cancer and women diagnosed with IVB type cervical cancer are rarely ever cured. Treatment options at this stage focus on reducing the symptoms of the cancer (palliation) by chemotherapy and radiation.
