Cervical Cancer Demographics
Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix, a part of the female reproductive system. It is the second most common form of cancer worldwide, second to breast cancer. Approximately 13,000 new cases and 4,400 deaths due to cervical cancer are reported annually in the United States. These numbers are greater in other parts of the world, including Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. According to Katina Robinson and Don S. Dizon in the book “Dx/ Rx: Cervical Cancer,” 83 percent of global cervical cancer cases occur in developing nations.
Most women who develop cervical cancer are between 40 and 50 years old. However, younger and even older can get affected. It is not uncommon to find women in their 20's being diagnosed with the condition. Cervical cancer demographics in the United States vary by socio-economic status, race and educational level. Research shows that women at the lower strata of society are more likely to contract the condition than those belonging to upper classes.
Cervical cancer rates in the United States vary among different races. The condition is highest among Hispanic women, followed by African-American women. African-American women are three times more likely to die from cervical cancer than white women. Pacific Islander, Asian and White women have the lowest rates of incidence. Educational level plays a role in establishing cervical cancer demographics. Research shows that the rates of cervical cancer are higher among undereducated women. These disparities can partly be attributed to differences in screening, treatment or rehabilitation.
