Risk Factors of Cervical Cancer

Risk factors of cervical cancer include all those elements that increase the likelihood of its occurrence. Cervical cancer is most commonly attributed to the human popillomavirus (HPV), which is transmitted via sexual contact. The female body contracts the HPV virus when immunity is low and the body is frequently exposed to it. HPV converts to full-blown cervical cancer when augmented by several risk factors, the most common of which are listed below.

Smoking History

Women who smoke are more at risk of developing cervical cancer than non-smokers. Smoking weakens the body and lowers its defences, allowing the HPV virus to thrive.

Malnutrition

A diet that does not include fundamental nutritional elements can weaken the body. A malnourished body is at high risk of contracting the HPV virus and cervical cancer.

Immune System Weakness

Women with weak immune systems are susceptible to contracting the HPV virus. HIV positive women and women who have had an organ transplanted are liable to contracting cervical cancer due to their lowered defences.

Limited Access to Health-Care Due to Poverty

Rates for cervical cancer are highest among women of underdeveloped nations. This is partly due to a lack of access to gynaecological, screening and treatment resources.

Hormonal Imbalance

Women who are overexposed to hormonal medication are also at high risk of developing cervical cancer. This includes the use of contraceptive pills and certain reproductive treatments. Raised levels of hormones stimulate the gynaecological organs to over-secrete, increasing the risk of abnormal uterine growths and cervical cancer.
