 Cervical Cancer Symptoms

Cervical cancer is cancer of the female reproductive organ. According to the American Cancer Society, there are approximately 11,000 cases of cervical cancer in the United States and 4,000 deaths from the cancer annually. The numbers are higher in other parts of the world, infecting approximately half a million women worldwide and causing greater than 288,000 deaths.

Cervical cancer is most commonly associated with a viral infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Other factors such as low socio-economic status, multiple sexual partners and smoking increase its chances. Many women with cervical cancer do not know they have the condition. The HPV virus lives in the mucous membranes or the skin and exhibits no symptoms or indication.

The early stages of cervical cancer have no apparent symptoms, which typically remain unnoticed till the cancer is advanced. Some women may experience symptoms but pass them off as ovulation or menstrual pains. The most common symptom of cervical cancer is bleeding after sexual intercourse or between menstrual periods. Post-menopausal women whose menstrual cycle has ceased may experience bleeding also.

Other symptoms of cervical cancer include incessant lower back pain, pain during urination, pelvic pain and blood in the stool or urine. Some women experience offensive and foul-smelling vaginal discharge and/or bowel and bladder symptoms. Most cervical cancer symptoms are accompanied by a gradual loss of weight. Some women get visible genital warts or physical changes in the anus, vulva or cervix.

Cervical cancer can be detected easily with a pap smear. Women who suspect they have the condition are advised to meet their doctor at the earliest.
