Causes of Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is cancer of the female reproductive system. The cervix is that part which outlines the mouth of the uterus. It is frequently exposed to viruses, especially in women who have an active sexual life. Cervical cancer is most commonly attributed to specific viral infections which impair the cervix to such an extent that they are unable to heal and eventually become cancerous. Cervical disfiguration due to a viral infection most commonly affects women with low immunity.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Cervical cancer is most commonly linked with the sexually transmitted HPV (Human Papillomavirus). The condition causes women to develop cervical warts. While not all instances of HPV infections lead to cancer, research suggests that women who develop cervical warts are twice as susceptible to cervical cancer than women with a health cervix. HPV virus is conceived via irresponsible sexual practices, multiple sexual partners and unsafe sex. Women who initiate sexual encounters at a young age are at risk for contracting the HPV virus. Oral contraceptives and certain hormones make women susceptible to contracting the HPV virus and genital warts.
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
Cervical cancer can develop in AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) patients who contract the HPV virus. AIDS suffers have compromised immune systems. Their condition does not let most wounds heal efficiently, causing infections. Cervical injuries are liable to become cancerous due to chronic illness.
Unhealthy Living
Tobacco use, excessive drinking and poor eating habits increase a woman's susceptibility to developing cervical cancer. Research indicates that smokers are twice as likely as non-smokers to develop cervical cancer. Lack of fresh vegetables and fruit also augments a woman's risk of developing the cancer.
